Antwoine Washington Artist Statement:
Working predominantly in painting and drawing, I tell short stories of justice and social improvement. Using portraiture and protest paintings that represent the African American experience, I examine the ways in which past issues affect the present.
Going through life as an African American man has its challenges. Through my work, I invite viewers to see the world through my eyes, fostering an intimate experience between audience member and subject. By encouraging this shift in perspective, I hope to counteract the stereotypes of the absent Black father, using my practice to push back against racist narratives. Recently, I have begun experimenting with installation, moving into three-dimensional space to envelop audiences in the stories I had previously only told on canvas. My first installation entitled Trillions is based on the story of my great grandfather. The work speaks to his experience as a runaway slave after his mother was raped and killed by their plantation owner. A decade later, at age 17, he avenged his mother’s death and ran north towards freedom. Installation is a way to expand my practice, sharing narratives like my grandfather’s that reveal the ways in which the past and present are intrinsically linked.
